Comprising a winter-passage across the Andes to Chili; with a visit to the gold regions of California and Australia, the South Sea Islands, Java &c.New York: Harper & Brothers, 1853 Stock Code: 146430
First American edition of this account of Gerstaecker's circumnavigation. A three volume edition was published in London in the same year.
Gerstaecker (1816-1872) first left Germany age 21 bound for California. He supported himself by whatever work came to hand and consequently spent a significant amount of time in the gold mines on the west coast. When he returned to Germany in 1843 he found great success as an author, his mother having published his letters home in the popular periodical Rosen. He therefore decided to undertake a second expedition, a circumnavigation of the world from 1849 to 1852, the adventures of which are recanted in the present work.
Octavo. Original green-blue cloth, titles to spine in gilt, boards blocked in blind.
Cloth a little mottled and rubbed, wear to spine ends and tips, foxing to contents, cords visible at gutters of a couple of gatherings, book block remaining firm; a very good copy.
