Notes

Although described on the title page as the second edition "enlarged and revised", this a one-volume edition following a two-volume second edition of 1844. The first was published in 1840. The cruise undertaken by Oscar Wilde's father as medical assistant to Glasgow magnate Robert Meiklam, was to "absent himself temporarily from Dublin for either reasons of health, or as a consequence of his having fathered a child out of wedlock"; the publication "established him as a Dublin savant" (ODNB). A superior travelogue, Wilde's work includes his "notes on the climate, natural history, topography and state of medicine in the places that he visited". Tobler describes him as "an accurate and well-informed observer". This edition is particularly uncommon, Copac recording only a single location, at Glasgow University, and OCLC adding four - Northwestern, Harvard, College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and the American University in Cairo.
