Narrative of the Loss of the Mary Rose,
at Spithead, July 20, 1545, from Original Manuscripts.Portsea: S. Horsey, Sen, 1842 Stock Code: 146039
First edition. It was issued with boards sourced from the wood of the Mary Rose itself, being bought at auction in 1840; the spine is lettered "Relic of the Mary Rose", and has the publisher's notice on the front pastedown to that effect.
The Mary Rose was among the largest of ships in the British navy for over 30 years, fighting in many battles against France. She sank during the Battle of Solent near the Isle of Wight in 1545, and was raised in 1982 to sit in the Mary Rose Museum.
Duodecimo. Original wood boards, black roan spine lettered in gilt, pink endpapers, edges gilt.
Joints and head of spine a little rubbed, internally clean with no marks of ownership. A very good copy.
