NotesA beautiful copy, one of a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies of this "flagellation classic" (Shorter, Written in the Flesh, p. 208). First published in Germany in 1840, Reinhard's novel was "written in the sanctimonious tones of social protest but featuring male and female warders flagellating their female charges" (Shorter p. 208).
