Notes

First edition. Prinsep (1792-1878) was a long-time "servant of John Company" and "recognized as one of ablest men in the service" (ODNB). On his retirement in 1843 after over 30 years in the sub-continent, he and his wife Sara, sister to Julia Margaret Cameron, set up in Little Holland House where their salon was "one of the artistic and literary centres of London" (ibid.). Prinsep wrote a number of important historical works, his Narrative of the Political and Military Transactions of British India being particularly highly thought of. This present work was based on his brother James's numismatic collection relating to the Greek colonies of Central Asia, revealing "the names of sovereigns of Greek race, and their Scythian, and Parthian successors also a language, the existence of which was hitherto unknown " (author's preface). James Prinsep, assay master of the Calcutta mint, died in 1840, his coin cabinet, note-book, and sketches being inherited by his widow, and passed to Henry to edit for publication in order to "place in a cheap and commodious form before the popular reader, the means of gratifying curiosity upon a subject often referred to, and the existence of which few are entirely ignorant."
