NotesFirst edition, first printing, very scarce cloth issue, publisher and editor Winston Leyland's own copy with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. Winston Leyland (b.1940) wasa leading figure in American LGBT publishing and won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, which was notable for its pioneering anthologies of gay writing from other cultures, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era. The vast majority of the clothbound copies of Gay Sunshine Press books were sold to libraries, and are consequently very scarce. "Now the Volcano is an extremely valuable exploration of what for most of us, North American or Latin American, up to now was an unknown jungle, a casa verde" (E. A. Lacey).
