Observations on the Deranged Manifestations of the Mind, or Insanity.
First American edition, with notes, improvements, and plates. With an appendix by A. Brigham.Boston, Marsh, Capen & Lyon, 1833 Stock Code: 115247
NotesFirst US edition, originally published at London in 1817. William Blake possessed a copy and annotated it: "Spurzheim's book of 1817 on insanity begins with a criticism of the public attitude toward and the medical treatment of madness... He argues that insanity and its symptoms have as many causes as any other disease and that it has no one specific remedy. Each case should be regarded as a special one without necessarily routine treatment" ( Hazard Adams, Blake's Margins: An Interpretive Study of the Annotations, 2009, pp. 141-43). Spurzheim (1776-1832) was known chiefly as a proponent of phrenology, and his book on that subject (Phrenology or the Doctrine of the Mental Phenomena, 1815) was studied by Poe.
Octavo. Original reddish linen cloth, paper spine label.
2 lithograph plates of cranial deformities, 2 of plans (for a "hospital for curable insane" and "house for convalescents").
Spine and covers patchily faded, spine label rubbed and fabric a little worn at head, scattered foxing but still a very good copy in the original cloth, with the errata slip before the appendix.
