Précédées d'une notice sur sa vie et ses ouvrages par M. Sainte Beuve. Vignettes par Tony Johannot.Paris: Ches Paulin, Libraire-Éditeur, 1835-36 Stock Code: 143509
First Johannot edition of the works of Molière, the master of French comedy, this edition for the first time thoroughly illustrated by Tony Johannot, and this copy lavishly bound by Hayday. Each volume bears the armorial bookplate of John Congreve of Mount Congreve estate (Waterford, Ireland), whose grandfather (also John Congreve) had assembled the Mount Congreve Library collection. The collection was catalogued by this John Congreve, and the catalogue published in 1825.
2 volumes. Lavishly bound by Hayday in contemporary green full calf, spines elaborately gilt-tooled in compartments with two coloured morocco labels (one red, one brown with yellow inlay), sides bordered with blind and gilt rules and gilt fleuron corner pieces, marbled endpapers and edges.
Illustrated frontispiece in the first volume, illustrated title pages to both volumes, and illustrations in the text throughout.
Spines somewhat darkened (though the gilt still bright) and some mild darkening around board edges, a few scratches and light rubbing to covers; a beautifully bound copy, entirely sound, internally fresh and in very good condition indeed.
