Notes

The attractive Pickering edition of Bacons' pioneering essay in support of empirical philosophy in a handsome Victorian presentation binding. "Francis Bacon conceived a massive plan for the reorganisation of scientific method and gave purposeful thought to the relation of science to public and social life. His pronouncement 'I have taken all knowledge to be my province' is the motto of his work" (PMM 119, for first edition). The text is from Basil Montagu's 16-volume Works of Francis Bacon, which he edited between 1825 and 1837, assisted by Francis Wrangham and William Page Wood.
