First edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For John Chancellor with the author's congratulations Dec 30th 1959". This was a wedding gift, inscribed on the occasion of Chancellor's marriage to Alice Jolliffe. Alice was a longtime friend of the Waugh family, and rather a favourite of the author as a child. Waugh used to joke that "if anything happened to Laura, he should marry her when she grew up. 'Sweet Alice', he said, when talking of her to his children, or 'your future stepmother'" (Donaldson, p. 40).
The Chancellor and Waugh families maintained a close association, and Alice visited them a year after her wedding. Afterwards, Waugh wrote, "Your handsome cousin Alice came to stay the night with us & was taken ill & stayed a week which was nice for us but sad for her" (letter to Viscount Asquith, 15 December 1960). Alice and John lent their Kew house to Waugh's daughter Margaret for her wedding reception in 1962. Their own daughter Anna (best known today for her role as "Duckface" in Four Weddings and a Funeral) was a childhood friend of Waugh's grandson Alexander, who later married their niece Eliza.
The connection between the families also extended into business. John Chancellor, a successful publisher and lifelong bibliophile, opened his own bookshop, Kew Books, in 1973. He hired Harriet Waugh as his first assistant - "Chancellors are always employing Waughs" she later noted (The Times, 25 January 2015). His brother Alexander, editor of the Spectator, employed Auberon Waugh to write a weekly column.
