Notes

First edition. Whitney, editor of Harper's Weekly and fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, travelled widely from a young age, spending five years exploring Mexico on horseback after graduating in 1879. The trip documented here, "a strenuous journey past Great Slave Lake to the Arctic Circle", was undertaken as a holiday (DAB).
