On this Island.New York: Random House, 1937 Stock Code: 147712
First US edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page "To Bill Gray. W. H. Auden", his printed name struck through.
The recipient Dr William ("Woods") Shelton Gray, Jr (1926-1993) fostered friendships with major literary figures such as Auden and T. S. Eliot, and on one occasion met Ezra Pound. Auden dedicated the poem "The Aliens" to Gray, toured Europe with him, and in 1971 found him a position as a visiting lecturer in American Literature at the University of Graz in Austria.
This collection of poetry was first published in the UK the year before as Look, Stranger! - a title Auden disliked, and he changed the title to On this Island for the American edition. The collection includes Auden's masterpiece "Paysage Moralisé", though titled here as number VII.
