Original poster for 1964 Paris Jazz Festival.Paris: M. Landais, Stock Code: 133642
Superb and highly uncommon poster for the 1964 Paris Jazz Festival, Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck headlining, the impressive roster of performers including Roland Kirk, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Stitt, Kenny Clark, Slam Stewart, J. J. Johnson, Thad Jones, Bud Freeman, Pee Wee Russell and many more. Wayne Shorter was yet to join Miles's quintet and Sam Rivers, named on the poster, took the tenor chair; otherwise all the other members of the "Second Great Quintet", Hancock, Carter, Williams, are present. Brubeck's quartet was the "classic" lineup of Paul Desmond, Joe Morello, Eugene Wright.
The delightfully humorous artwork - the names of all the artists contained within the face of a smiling hipster replete with beret, shades and goatee - is by the great French cartoonist and political satirist Siné, "a fan, an expert and a collector of jazz (traditional and free)" (The Comics Journal, 16 May 2016, retrieved 20.05.19).
Image 594 x 366 mm; overall 724 x 512 mm. Printed in green and black; archival linen backing. Framed and glazed.
Short closed-tear at top edge professionally repaired, light lateral crease across centre otherwise in very good condition, the colouring bright and fresh.
