First edition of Dickens's last completed novel, bound from the original parts as issued from May 1864 to November 1865, with the stab-holes visible; handsomely bound.

"Our Mutual Friend had a mixed reception (the young Henry James's harshly dismissive review in The Nation is notorious) but its stock has risen dramatically in recent years and it is now generally regarded as one of his very greatest works" (ODNB).

Description

2 volumes bound in 1, octavo (208 x 129 mm). Late 19th-century tree calf by Mansell, twin red and brown morocco labels, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, gilt edges.

Illustrations

With 40 wood engravings including frontispieces. Extra-illustrated with portrait frontispiece of Dickens, and with the front wrapper of the original part IV bound at front.

Condition

Complete with half-titles. Joints and extremities neatly restored, contents clean and fresh, an excellent copy.
