Notes

First edition of this well-written memoir of a fascinating career, this a particularly attractive copy. Chesterton served in the field train department of the Royal Artillery in the Peninsula and in the war of 1812 (burning of Washington, Baltimore, Battle of New Orleans) and subsequently, with the army of Columbia under Bolivar, as judge advocate of the British Legion in Venezuela. In later life he was governor of the house of correction at Cold Bath Fields, and a noted prison reformer, being acquainted with Dickens and Elizabeth Fry. He gives some an account of this period of his life at the end of volume II. G. L. Chesterton was related to G. K., and is described in Michael Coren's biography of the writer as "a professional fighting man" (Gilbert: The Man Who Was G. K. Chesterton, 1990, p. 10).
