Notes

First edition in English of Wittgenstein's Philosophische Bemerkungen (first 1964), edited by Wittgenstein's student and close friend, the American philosopher Rush Rhees. Monk calls it "the most verificationist, and at the same time the most phenomenological, of all his writings. It uses the tools adopted by the Vienna Circle for a task diametrically opposed to their own" (Monk, p. 292). As Wittgenstein's original typescript was merely a long sequence of paragraphs, Rhees is responsible for the text's division into sections.
