Forster's copyFirst edition, first impression, presentation copy of the author's debut, inscribed on the front free endpaper "In all humility from Attia Hosain". Although not named, the recipient was E. M. Forster, as evidenced by his library label to the front pastedown.
The British-Indian novelist, author, writer, broadcaster, journalist, and actor, Attia Hosain (1913-1998) was a woman of letters and a diasporic writer who wrote in English although her mother tongue was Urdu.
This copy also bears the bookplate of Timothy & Jane Allen, and with a loosely inserted two-page autograph letter signed addressed to "Tim", on Trinity College, Cambridge headed-paper (the sender obscure), describing that "Forster made a point of encouraging young Indian writers so this is not a bad book to have", though recommending the author's semi-autobiographical novel, Sunlight on a Broken Column (1961), as a better book.
Octavo. Original red and white patterned cloth, titles in gilt on grey background. With dust jacket designed by Trekkie Ritchie.
Minimal bumping to corners, the binding otherwise sharp, internally fresh and clean. A near-fine copy in near-fine jacket.
