First edition, first printing, a superb association copy, inscribed by Stephen Spender, Christopher Isherwood, and Gerald Hamilton on the front free endpaper. Spender inscribed the copy to Isherwood: "For Christopher Isherwood from Stephen January 27 1931"; Isherwood then presented the book the following year to Hamilton: "Handed on to Comrade Hamilton with revolutionary greetings Nov. 15. 32, Christopher I"; twenty-five years later Hamilton re-presented the book to an unidentified recipient: "To Brest? from Comrade Gerald Hamilton Jan 1958".
The first inscription dates from Spender's visit to Isherwood in Berlin in early 1931. Interestingly, Isherwood's subsequent presentation of this copy to Gerald Hamilton coincides with his and Spender's brief contretemps of 1932 (Spender even removed his intended dedication to Isherwood from his first books of poems, published in January 1933). Isherwood met Hamilton in Berlin in the winter of 1930-1, when Hamilton was employed there as the German sales representative for The Times - a job he eventually lost due to his involvement in left-wing politics. Gerald Hamilton, a notorious figure in his own time, once described as "the wickedest man in Europe", was immortalised by Isherwood as the title character of Mr Norris Changes Trains (1935). On one occasion Isherwood drily noted that "Gerald having a moral lapse is like someone falling off footstool at the bottom of the Grand Canyon" (Isherwood, p. 78).
