Pieces of Ancient Popular Poetry.
From authentic manuscripts and old printed copies. Adorned with cuts.London, William Pickering, 1833 Stock Code: 117141
NotesSecond edition, reissued posthumously by Ritson's nephew. Originally published anonymously in 1791, this work continues an academic attack on Bishop Thomas Percy, the compiler of the Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, throwing doubt on the existence of Percy's original sources and accusing him of forging a number of ballads. With the bookplate of Sir Richard Colt Hoare to the front pastedown. Richard Hoare was a leading antiquarian and archaeologist, known for his translations of the works of Gerald of Wales and his histories of Wiltshire. He carried out the first recorded excavations of Stonehenge alongside William Cunnington in 1798. This is a lovely copy in the cloth, uncommon thus.
Octavo. Original brown cloth, decorative frame stamped in blind enclosing blind-stamped vignette to covers, blind rules to spine forming compartments, titles to spine gilt, cream endpapers.
With illustrations to the text by Thomas Bewick.
Light wear to head of spine and tips, occasional foxing to margins, not affecting text; an excellent copy.
