His father-in-law's copy, uncut in boardsFirst edition of the architect's first major work, featuring designs for Doncaster Mansion House, modelled after Inigo Jones's unexecuted design for a royal palace at Whitehall for James I, and now one of only three such Mansion Houses in England. From the library of the architect's father-in-law Richard Beaumont, with his ownership inscriptions to front board, front pastedown, and title page, twice dated 1752. Paine had first been married to Sarah Jennings, daughter and coheir of George Jennings of Pontefract. After Sarah's death and before June 1748, Paine married Charlotte Beaumont (1722-1766), youngest daughter of Richard Beaumont of Whitley Beaumont, near Huddersfield.

With 17 plates, numbered I- XXI (4 double-page plates have 2 numbers each) engraved by Edward Rooker after Paine's designs, title incorporating vignette portrait of Paine by Grignion after Hayman.
Recent ownership inscription on first blank recto. Boards rubbed, corners worn, spine split in lower compartment, inner hinges reinforced, lower stitching gone between letterpress and plates but held by backstrip, a very good copy.
