Poems.
With a Memoir.
Cambridge: Macmillan and Co., 1862 Stock Code: 117878
"But westward, look, the land is bright!"
First edition thus, presentation copy, inscribed by the author's wife (Blanche Mary Clough, née Shore-Smith), on the half-title, "With Mrs. Clough's kind regards". With an additional inscription by its recipient below noting the date of its receipt, "Rec. 6th August 1862, sent to me at Chew Magna, C. L. Rose". This posthumous memorial issue (Clough had died in 1861) was published by Clough's wife in Britain and America simultaneously, with the memoirs written by F. T Palgrave and C. E. Norton respectively. Blanche Clough was a cousin of Florence Nightingale, whom Arthur Clough assisted in her campaign to reform military hospitals and escorted "to Calais in 1854 on her first voyage to the Crimea" (ODNB).Originally issued in January 1849 as Ambarvalia, a collection of verse by Clough and his Cambridge friend Thomas Burbidge, the book was reissued in 1850 from the original sheets with Burbidge's poems omitted and a simple fly-title, "Poems / by / Arthur H. Clough", in place of the original title. This is the therefore the third issue overall. "This collection contained Clough's choice of the poems written during the years at Balliol and Oriel. Most are short poems, recalling the trials of student years and the journeys of the religious doubter. 'Qui laborat, orat', admired by Tennyson, expresses the tension of prayer to a God who is ineffable; 'The New Sinai' dramatizes the conflict between religion
and science" (ODNB). Presentation copies of this posthumous edition are rare, with the last one recorded at auction appearing back in 1939.
