Inscribed by the authorLimited edition, number 41 of 500 copies of this facsimile of the author's first published book (a great rarity in the original 1928 edition), familiarly inscribed by him using his first name reserved for friends, "Bill Gray from Wystan Auden", his printed name struck through.
Dr William ("Woods") Shelton Gray, Jr (1926-1993) fostered friendships with major literary figures such as Auden and T. S. Eliot, and on one occasion met Ezra Pound. Auden dedicated the poem "The Aliens" to Gray, toured Europe with him, and in 1971 found him a position as a visiting lecturer in American Literature at the University of Graz in Austria.
This facsimile edition includes a new foreword by Stephen Spender, who printed the first edition in 1928. It reproduces manuscript corrections by Auden and Spender, including two tipped-in errata leaves in Spender's hand, which were printed in other copies of the original edition.
Duodecimo. Original orange cloth, front cover lettered in black.
Covers slightly soiled, internally crisp and fresh. A very good copy indeed.
