Poems, chiefly lyrical.
London: Effingham Wilson, 1830 Stock Code: 144305
An exceptional copy of Tennyson's first independent poetry collection
First edition of Tennyson's first solo poetry collection, a very commendable copy in the original boards. The collection was preceded only by Poems by Two Brothers (1827), in which he appeared anonymously alongside his (in fact three) brothers. "Some of Tennyson's most enduring notes, elegiacally lyrical, with his riven sensibility... are especially manifest in this volume's most remarkable achievements, 'Mariana', 'A spirit haunts the year's last hours', and 'The Kraken'" (ODNB).
This copy has the first state of p. 91 uncorrected from "19", and the second state of p. 72 with "carcanet" corrected from "coronet", without priority of issue and the sheets most likely randomly distributed among copies.
Description
Duodecimo. Original boards, printed paper label. Housed in a custom early 20th-century red morocco pull-off case.
Condition
Contemporary ownership signature of H. J. Thompson to front pastedown, notation "A" to paper label. Complete with errata and terminal advertisements. Trivial splits at spine ends, very faint foxing, the head of spine glued down which has slightly discoloured. Still a remarkably nice copy.
