Poems of Chivalry, Faery, and The Olden Time.
London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1840 Stock Code: 139881
First and only edition of this unusually early example of this genre, anticipating Tennyson's Arthurian poetry by over a decade. Possibly a family copy, with the ink ownership inscription "W. de C. Prideaux" to the half-title in a later hand, seemingly the author of Notes on Mediaeval Enamelled Armorial Horse Trappings, with Reference to a Weymouth Find (1911) and Some Dorset Manor Houses with their Literary and Historical Associations (1907). An uncommon survival, Library Hub and Libray Hub locate only five copies in the UK (BL, Cambridge, Durham, NLS, Oxford).
Description
Small octavo. Original green vertical-combed cloth, titles and chivalric motifs in gilt to spine, pictorial design of a knight on horseback in gilt to each board, yellow coated endpapers, untrimmed.
Illustrations
Engraved frontispiece and additional title.
Condition
Corners gently bumped, a couple of small marks to boards, the binding otherwise unfaded, front free endpaper lacking, front hinge broken but holding, light scattered foxing, internally untoned; a good copy.
