Poems of West & East.London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1917 Stock Code: 145998
First edition, first impression, of the author's first regularly published book. Sackville-West's collection of twenty-two poems, thirteen of which appear here for the first time, was written while living in Istanbul with her newly married husband Harold Nicolson, who was working as a diplomat there. Their house at Cihangir offered Vita her first garden (planting the seed of a passion which would later bloom in her famous garden at Sissinghurst), and their life there initiated the insatiable wanderlust that would characterise the poet's subsequent adventures.
Octavo. Original grey cloth-backed blue paper boards, printed paper title label to spine and front cover, edges untrimmed.
Frontispiece view of Constantinople.
A couple of bumps to extremities, board edges slightly faded, a few trivial marks to covers, contents clean. A very good copy.
Cross & Ravenscroft-Hulme A3.
