Poems on Various Subjects.London: for G. G. and J. Robinsons, and J. Cottle, Bristol, 1796 Stock Code: 143174
His first collection of poetry, in contemporary marbled calfFirst edition of Coleridge's first collection of poetry, preceding the Lyrical Ballads by two years, and also including four sonnets by Charles Lamb marking his first publication in book form.
The collection sold well enough for a second edition to appear the following year, which the author revised; in his later fame, Coleridge disavowed the collection as juvenilia. Among the shorter pieces is his "Effusion... to a young Ass", for which he was roundly mocked.
Small octavo (153 x 94 mm). Contemporary marbled calf, marbled endpapers.
Bound without half title as often but with errata and terminal advertisement leaf. Terminal binder's blank with blindstamp of G. H. Radford, rear pastedown with old auction label. Joints and extremities expertly restored, former label now lost, split at foot of rear joint but holding firm, contents with a couple of instances of light soiling but generally clean. A very good copy.
