Winchester College book-plate awarding a 1920 Vere Herbert Smith History prize to Charles Chichele Oman to the front pastedown, his daughter, Julia Trevelyan Oman's bookplate to the front free. The son of Sir Charles Oman, noted historian, best known for his magisterial seven-volume history of the Peninsular War, C. C. Oman was an authority on domestic silverware across the ages, keeper of metalwork at the V&A; his daughter Julia was recognised as "one of the most imaginative and intelligent theatre and opera designers in Britain" (Daily Telegraph obituary).

Contemporary prize binding of full tan morocco calf by Rivière & Son, title gilt direct to spine, narrow bands with dotted gilt roll, compartments with floral lozenge centre-tool and fine arabesque cornerpieces, wide, shaped panel to both boards filled with similar dotted arabesques, supralibros of the arms of Winchester school, single fillet edge-roll, all edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers.
