Poet Charles Kains-Jackson's annotated copyFirst edition in English, this book was first published in France in 1854 as "La poésie des races celtiques". Ernest Renan (1823-1892) is best known for his 1863 Vie de Jésus, which was an immediate success, but " it is Renan's approach to the subject and his beautiful prose that gave it lasting eminence" (PMM 352).
This copy belonged to the Uranian poet Charles Kains-Jackson's (1857-1933) and is profusely annotated and underlined in pencil and red and blue crayon. It also features eight press cuttings pasted on to both pastedowns and the last few leaves of ads.
Duodecimo. Original red cloth, titles in gilt to spine, publisher's flourished device blocked in blind to front board.

Ownership ink inscription to front free endpaper "Charles Kains-Jackson, Richmond. 21 May 1910"; bookseller's stamp to front pastedown. Light sunning to spine, spine ends gently bumped, a few small marks to rear board, internally untoned; a very good copy.
