A rare and perfectly dastardly presentation photograph of the poet, who has taken a print of him sitting by the fireside with his wife Caitlin, cut her out of it, and inscribed it on the verso to his previous lover, "For Emmy, from Dylan, this 1/2 a picture, January 1939". Caitlin was, that January, nine months pregnant with their first child.
The recipient was Emily Holmes Coleman, an American writer best known for her autobiographical novel The Shutter of Snow (1930) based on her episode of madness. The was close friends with Djuna Barnes and Peggy Guggenheim, and Thomas had met her through a group of louche surrealists including David Gascoyne and Eileen Agar. They were lovers at the time Thomas met Caitlin, and though his attentions were largely diverted to his future wife, they stayed in touch. The enlarged edition of Thomas's Collected Letters includes four letters from Thomas to Coleman.
The photograph is by Nora Summers, the photographer and lover of Caitlin's mother Yvonne Macnamara, taken as part of a sitting with the newlyweds Dylan and Caitlin, at Blashford in Ringwood. Hampshire, Caitlin's family home. All original prints of Summers's photographs are scarce, and inscribed photographs from Thomas are rare.
This is offered together with a copy (signed by Towns) of Dylan Thomas and the Bohemians: The Photographs of Nora Summers (by Gabriel Summers and Leonie Summers with Jeff Towns) in which the image is reproduced.

Black and white photographic print (245 x 125 mm), inscribed to verso.

Crudely cut down right side, with additional incision into the image, and an obtrusive crease from it running to top edge, some stains to verso, poor but characterful condition, the image nonetheless sharp and unfaded.
