Portraits.Monte Carlo: Andrew Sauret, 1955 Stock Code: 130705
NotesFirst edition, number 1,682 of 500 copies in English numbered from 1,500-2,000, out of a total edition of 2,850 copies (2,350 were in French). The work was entirely planned by Matisse, who designed the cover, chose which portraits would be reproduced, and created an original lithograph for the frontispiece. Matisse also contributed the introduction, where he sums up that a portrait "appears to me as though every charcoal stroke was removing from a mirror the mist which had so far prevented me from seeing it" (p. 15).

With 60 black and white portraits, and 33 colour mounted plates, all by Matisse.
Spine of chemise with very light fading and tiny splits at ends, very minor foxing to covers. A near-fine copy.
