First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to her publisher Tom Maschler on the front free endpaper: "Dear Tom, Here is the little book of lectures I told you about. Love Doris". Tom Maschler was head of the publishing company Jonathan Cape, which published the first UK edition of the book later that year, under the same title. The book collects five lectures that Lessing delivered on the question of personal freedom and individual responsibility in a world of political rhetoric and mass emotions. Maschler (born 1933) was a highly influential figure in 20th-century literature, launching the careers of various writers including Ian McEwan, Bruce Chatwin, Cliva James, and Edna O'Brien; fifteen of his authors were awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He additionally has the honour of conceiving the Booker Prize, and for having introduced his friend Quentin Blake to Roald Dahl. This copy has his bookplate, designed by Quentin Blake, to the front cover verso.
