Problems of Economics and Sociology.
(Untersuchungen über die Methode der Socialwissenschaften und der Politischen Oekonomie insbesondere). Edited and with an Introduction by Louis Schneider. Translated by Francis J. Nock.
Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1963 Stock Code: 140391
First edition in English of Carl Menger's Untersuchungen über die Methode der Socialwissenschaften und der Politischen Oekonomie insbesondere, originally published in German in 1883, a really nice copy.
Carl Menger (1840-1921), founder of the Austrian school of marginal analysis, was both the most influential and the least read of the major figures who gave economic theory the shape it preserved from about 1885 to 1935. In the Untersuchungen, his second major work, he "undertook to vindicate the importance of theory in the social sciences. This was an effort that seemed necessary to him in view of the complete indifference or even hostility which most of his German colleagues, influenced by the antitheoretical attitude of the 'younger historical school' in economics, had shown towards his attempt in the earlier Grundsätze der Volkswirthschaftslehre (1871) to reconstruct economic theory" (von Hayek in IESS).
