Proems.London: The Fortune Press, 1938 Stock Code: 109002
First edition, first impression. The Fortune Press made most of its money through a steady output of pornography, and also provided its owner Reginald Caton with a convenient tax dodge for his activities as a slum landlord in Brighton. Caton would occasionally commission works of "proper literature" to provide his pornography list with a veneer of respectability (Bradford, The Odd Couple, Ch. 3). Scarce in this condition.
Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine gilt, twin rules to covers in blind, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With the dust jacket.
Woodcut title-page and 8 head- and tailpieces by Rayner Heppenstall.
Tanning to endpapers as usual. An excellent copy in the spine-toned dust jacket.
