Knight (1894-1981), a pioneering journalist and close personal friend of the Kennedys, founded Knight Newspapers, which would later become Knight Ridder, which was for a time the largest newspaper publisher in the United States.
Profiles in Courage won Kennedy the 1957 Pulitzer Prize for biography, being an examination "of politicians who had retained their principles despite difficult circumstances" (American National Biography).
