First and only edition, inscribed "To Baron & Baroness Brantsen, o. d. Zyss, With kindest remembrances and best wishes from the author's wife. Christmas 1868, Richmond House" on the initial blank. Sir James Abbott (1807-1896) was an army officer and colonial administrator best remembered for his success in pacifying the tribal regions of the North West Frontier as commissioner for the Hazara region from 1845 to 1853, for which the city of Abbottabad was named in his honour. He was also "an imaginative writer of romantic verse" (ODNB), and was described by Sir Henry Lawrence as a "true knight-errant". In the preface to his re-imagining of the Prometheus myth he claims to have consciously deviated from the versions of Aeschylus and Shelley. The Brantsens were an aristocratic family from Arnhem in the Netherlands. Willem Gerard Brantsen van de Zijp (1831-1899) succeeded his father, Derk, as baron in 1851 (Zyss apparently an alternative spelling for Zijp). Uncommon: just four copies traced in British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library, Oxford, Cambridge and National Library of Scotland), and four world-wide, all in the United States.

Octavo. Contemporary tan calf, raised bands gilt to spine within rolled black bands forming compartments, red skiver letterpiece to second, remaining compartments decoratively panelled in gilt, dogtooth and two-line gilt border to covers enclosing a scallop and dot border in blind, marbled edges and endpapers, floral roll to turn-ins gilt.

Mild pale foxing to endleaves and very occasionally to margins, contemporary manuscript correction to p. 314. An excellent copy in a fine contemporary binding.
