First and only edition, decidedly uncommon, OCLC shows BL, and perhaps just one copy in the US. Important account of the early development of Russo-Bukharan relations. The emirate had accepted Russian protectorate status in 1868, but continued to pursue its own policies in some areas. Britain had certainly attempted to bring influence to bear in Central Asia, mostly through Afghanistan. But in 1870 Russia's main problem in the region was the emirate of Khiva, against which they were preparing an expedition, in the success of which Bukharan support was vital. Thus the embassy of 1870 was commissioned to ensure the good graces of Bukhara's whimful emir Muzaffar ad-Din. Leading the mission was General Lev Feofilovich Kostenko (1841-1891), of the Turkestan General Staff, who had been in Central Asia for several years, and was "a long-standing advocate of annexation a leading proponent of Russia's civilising mission in Asia" (Becker, Russia's Protectorates in Central Asia: Bukhara and Khiva, 1865-1924, p.149). Kostenko's task of reasoning with the emir was made considerably more difficult by the presence of an Afghan embassy accompanied by 12,000 troops, in Bukhara for boundary negotiations. However, the general prevailed in his persuasion, securing the emir's support, and in 1873 Khiva fell to a Russian force under von Kaufman. The first of Kostenko's publications on Russian Turkestan, attractive and genuinely scarce.
