A Novel. In Two Volumes. Third Edition.London, Chapman & Hall, 1863 Stock Code: 128293
NotesStated "third edition" (i.e. first edition, third issue). Sadleir argues that the first six editions were in fact separate issues of the first edition, advertised as subsequent editions in order to create demand among the competing circulating libraries.
This copy circulated among the members of the Cardigan Book Society subscription library, as per its printed order pasted to the front pastedown of the first volume, with names and dates filled in manuscript. The form is for Mrs. Lloyd of Noyadd, given "10 days to read." Her subscription price of 21 shillings, or 1 guinea, matches the low rate set by Mudie.
2 volumes, octavo. Original pink blind-stamped cloth, titles in gilt to spines, untrimmed.
Bookseller's ticket (Clougher, Cardigan) to rear pastedown of vol. 1. Recased, sometimes restored, spines uniformly sunned, rear free endpaper of vol. 2 renewed; else a very good set.
