First edition of this memoir by Benson Earle Hill (bap. 1790, d. 1845) who served as Artillery Staff Officer at the battle of New Orleans. He served with the Royal Regiment of Artillery until 1822 and "he was extremely well-travelled, as the army had taken him to Ireland, North America, and Europe" (ODNB).
2 volumes, octavo (187 x 117 mm). Bound by B. West in black morocco-grained skiver, titles to spine gilt, boards and spines elaborately decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers.
Contemporary gift inscription to verso of front free endpaper. Extremities slightly rubbed and worn, light foxing to prelims and endmatter, occasional mild foxing to text blocks, ink stain to rear endpaper of Volume I. An excellent set.
