Notes

First edition of this detailed account. Sylvester, an assistant surgeon, served with the Central India Field Force and saw action against the Ranee of Jhansi at Gwalior and the pursuit and capture of Tantia Topi. "His recollections praise the prodigious feats of endurance displayed by the forces of General Sir Hugh Rose in the face of exhaustion, hunger, dehydration and disease" (Riddick).
A fascinating familial association copy, with a gift inscription from General William Beatson, and a subsequent inscription from Evelyn Wood, who served under Beatson (1804-1872) during the Indian Mutiny. Beatson and his troops are mentioned here on page 233. The first inscription, contemporary with publication, is from Beatson to Wood's mother, the prolific novelist Emma Caroline Michell: "Lady Wood - Rivenhall Place, near Witham, Sept 1860 - from General Beatson". Evelyn (1838-1919) was transferred to the 17th lancers on 9 October 1857, embarking for India in 1858, and was awarded the Victoria Cross for rescuing a local merchant from eighty mutineers at Sindhara on 29 December 1859. Wood's subsequent inscription is to his son: "To Lt. Colonel Charles Wood D.S.O. from Evelyn Wood, March 1918". Charles Wood (1873-1936), also had a distinguished military career. This work also bears the bookplate of David Hubert Balfour, the son of Dame Leslie Wood (1899-1987) director of the Auxiliary Territorial Service and Evelyn's granddaughter.
