Reflections: Steve Lacy plays Thelonious Monk.Los Angeles: Original Jazz Classics, 1983 Stock Code: 144542
Lacy's first all-Monk album and the first album made up entirely of Monk compositions recorded by another artist, signed boldly in full in black marker pen on the front cover. Lacy's is an uncommon autograph and the context here is highly appealing, as the soprano master devoted much thought to exploring Monk's work.
This is a reissue of the original 1959 release. Lacy is accompanied by Mal Waldron (piano), Buell Neidlinger (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). Weiss notes that playing Monk's music "was a radical concept for a band in the early 1960s" and Ian Carr in Jazz: The Rough Guide writes, "Lacy is very exposed in this context and rises impressively to the occasion, aided and abetted by the Monkishly wise Mal Waldron". The Penguin Guide awards it the maximal rating of four stars, signifying "very fine: an outstanding record that yields consistent pleasure and is a notable example of the artist's work".
12-inch vinyl LP (OJC-063 / NJ-8206), new plain paper sleeve (original sleeve also present), original album cover.
Spine toned and a little worn, other light shelf wear, a few old stains to back cover at join with spine; a few light abrasions to disc otherwise very good.
