Sammelband of French military manuals in charming streaked sheep with slip-case.Highly attractive volume, combining early editions of three rare Napoleonic-era manuals for the organisation and administration of infantry on service at home and in the field, in camp and quarters; containing immensely detailed regulations for the duties incumbent on various ranks, with examples of the extensive tables and forms required in record-keeping. These regulations represent a fine encapsulation of the attention to detail and good order which characterized the French Army under Napoleon, this particular volume being set apart by the unusual charm and excellent repair of the binding and protective slip-case.
3 volumes octavo (187 x 100 mm) bound as one. Elegantly bound in contemporary full streaked sheep, title gilt direct to flat spine ruled, compartments formed by bands of small floral tools between single rules, alternate sun in splendour and naval tools within, dotted roll enclosing a ribbon-twist panel in blind to the boards, gilt edge roll, page edges of each section of the text block stained differently - red, yellow, green - matching silk page-markers in each colour, now detached but present; housed in contemporary brown streaked pastepaper covered case with sliding lid, lined with decorative paper, yellow ground sprigged with red.
Tables to the text.
Very lightly rubbed on the boards, endpapers a touch mottled, half-title and title of first-named loose, pale toning else, case is rubbed with a few splits and knocks, but entirely sound, very good.
