ou, Apologie pour l'auteur de la Théorie des loix, et des Lettres sur cette théorie: avec la réfutation du systême des philosophes économistes.[No place or publisher stated]: 1771 Stock Code: 129152
First edition of Linguet's attack on Montesquieu and his philosophe supporters, continuing the extensive critique offered by Linguet in his 1767 absolutist treatise Theorie des Lois Civiles. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet (1736-1794) was a French journalist and lawyer "whose delight in taking views opposing everyone else's earned him exiles, imprisonment, and finally the guillotine" (Encyclopaedia Britannica online). His rejection of Montesquieu, perhaps the most respected of the enlightenment writers, fitted neatly with his contrarian aims. The work is uncommon: WorldCat lists copies in 14 locations, WorldCat adds a single copy in Britain, in the London School of Economics.
2 volumes duodecimo (159 x 94 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spines decorated in gilt with twin red and tan calf labels (second volume lettered tom. III-IV despite three volumes being all published), marbled endpapers and edges.
With 2 printed tables to vol. II.
Half-titles and terminal catalogue in vol. II present. Wear to extremities, spine labels chipped with minor loss to lettering, chip at foot of spine and rear joint of vol. I, joints splitting but firm, some insect damage to rear cover of vol. II, front endpapers lacking. Still a very good, unrestored copy.
