First edition, first impression, first issue (without the dedication page). This is Mervyn Peake's first commission as illustrator and his second illustrated book, following Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor (1939); its success led to Chatto & Windus commissioning Peake to illustrate their edition of Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark (1941). His illustrations for these nursery rhymes have been described as drawing out "the darkest implications of the stories".
