First edition, first issue, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to fellow poet Allen Upward (1863-1926) on the front free endpaper, "To Allen Upward from E. P. Sept 1913". Upward was an influential intellectual figure for Pound at this time, "Upward started Pound off in a new direction by putting him on to the Chinese classics. He had him reading Confucius and Mencius in French in October 1913, and he would have shown him his own selection of The Sayings of Confucius (1904)" (Moody, p. 238). Pound was also influenced by Upward's 1910 work The New Word. Reviewing the work in the 23 April 1914 issue of The New Age, Pound wrote that "If you refer to Upward as a thinker they tell you he writes detective stories. Yet if 'The New Word' and 'The Divine Mystery' had been written by a civil servant or a clerk in a dry goods shop, or by a broken-down parson, they would have been acclaimed as great works" (Pound). Nine of Upward's poems were included in Pound's Des Imagistes (1914).
The publisher's catalogue, present here, was "cut out in some presentation copies, distributed after the failure of the publisher" (Gallup). This copy with the misprint "personal" for "personae" on the list of Pound's other works on p. 2. Swift went out of business soon after Ripostes was published in October 1912. The remaining sheets, of which there were"not more than 500", were sent to Elkin Mathews to be used in the combined Canzoni and Ripostes, which they published in various issues in 1913 and 1915 (ibid.).

Octavo. Original blue and white patterned cloth, rounded spine, titles to front cover in gilt, edges untrimmed.

With the 32 page publisher's catalogue at end.

Spine slightly cocked and lightly browned, touch of wear to tips, a couple of small bumps to foot of rear board, offsetting to endpapers; a very good copy indeed.
