Sailing Alone Around the World.
Illustrated by Thomas Fogarty and George Varian.New York: The Century Co., 1900 Stock Code: 147913
First edition, first printing, of this superb narrative of the first single-handed circumnavigation of the globe, in uncommonly attractive condition.
Slocum departed North America at Sambro Island Lighthouse near Halifax, Nova Scotia on 3 July 1895 aboard his gaff-rigged sloop the Spray. He returned more than three years later, on 27 June 1898, to Newport, Rhode Island, having circumnavigated the world. Sailing Alone Around the World "has been compared favourably to Thoreau's Walden. Slocum perceived his world in a poetic manner and described his vision of reality with grace" (Toy).
Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine and front board in silver and green, top edge gilt, others uncut.
Half-tone frontispiece and 64 illustrations (of which 18 full-page).
Minute bumping to head of spine, the binding otherwise sharp, internally crisp; a fine copy.
