Savrola.
A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania.
New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900 Stock Code: 119574
Churchill's only novel, in bright original cloth
First edition in book form, first printing, of Churchill's only novel, his third published book, but the first he undertook to write, and the second he completed. Churchill's melodramatic tale of liberal revolution in an autocratic Mediterranean state was originally serialised in Macmillan's Magazine between May and December 1899. This edition, published in 4,000 copies on 1 February 1900, preceded the UK issue by twelve days, possibly as US law required a foreign-authored book to be manufactured in America to ensure copyright protection. "Whether they deem it a key indication of Churchill's innermost philosophy and political morality or just a yarn, Savrola continues to exert a grip on devotees of the canon" (Langworth).Description
Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spine and within single frame to front board gilt. Housed in a custom blue cloth flat back box.
Condition
Spine slightly toned, a couple of light marks to contents, endpapers and edges slightly foxed. An excellent copy in bright cloth.
