First edition, presentation copy inscribed "with the author's sincere regard" in the author's hand on the half title. This copy also contains an autograph letter signed from Arnold to Mr Osborne Turner Junr., on Whitehall Education Department stationery, informing the recipient of his supplementary book "Higher Schools and Universities in Germany" published by Macmillan in 1874. As well as being Oxford Professor of Poetry, Arnold was Foreign Assistant Commissioner to the Schools Enquiry Commission, one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools, and formerly Foreign Assistant Commissioner to the Commission For Enquiring into the State of Popular Education in England. The book is very scarce signed or inscribed.

Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles gilt to spine, dark blue coated endpapers.
Condition
Spine lighlty faded, rubbing to extremities, a few marks to cloth, hinges with some incipient superficial cracking but on the whole internally sound and clean, Very good condition.
