First edition, first impression, inscribed by Myfanwy Piper, "Villiers David from Myfanwy Piper Feb 1945", on the front free endpaper. An art critic and opera librettist, Myfanwy Piper had been married to the artist John Piper since 1939. Villiers David (1906-1985) was himself a writer, artist and art collector. Sea Poems, which is part of the New Excursions Into English Poetry series (general editors W. J. Turner and Sheila Shannon), is a beautifully illustrated anthology of poems on the sea from Homer to Kipling. The book is very scarce inscribed.
