Notes

First edition, first printing. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the half-title: "For Emerson and Dina, Man Ray 1966"; pencilled inscription on the front free endpaper identifies the recipients as Emerson and Dina Woelffer and the presentation as dating to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's 1966 Man Ray retrospective, with their red embossed ownership label and inked note of acquisition on "July 31-64".

An excellent association copy: "Painter, printmaker and sculptor, Emerson Woelffer 1914-2003 was a prominent Abstract Expressionist working outside New York and widely regarded as the 'grandfather of L.A. Modernism.' Educated at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1935-37), he studied with Boris Anisfeld, Francis Chapin, Albin Polasek and Louis Ritman... In 1942 Laszlo Moholy-Nagy invited him to teach at the Institute of Design in Chicago (initially known as the New Bauhaus). While there he met Fernand Léger, Roberto Matta and Man Ray when they stopped in Chicago" (modernistwest.com, retrieved 29.01.19). Woelffer's limited edition lithograph "Homage to Man Ray" (1970) draws on one of the most celebrated icons of Surrealism, Man Ray's "Cadeau" or "Gift" of 1921 (illustrated at p. 116 of Self Portrait), which "consists of an everyday continental flat iron of the sort that had to be heated on a stove, transformed here into a non-functional, disturbing object by the addition of a single row of fourteen nails" (Tate). Dina Woelffer (1907-1990) worked primarily as a photographer, with a major show at the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1968.
