Notes

First editions. A superb set of Zangwill's novels including the first Anglo-Jewish best-seller, Children of the Ghetto, and the popular satire The King of the Schnorers, about Jewish beggars in late 18th-century London. Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) was the child of Eastern European immigrants to England and spent his literary career exploring issues of identity, assimilation, and cultural tolerance, not only for Jews but for minorities of all types. As well as a popular novelist he was a prolific critic, translator, and playwright, and an outspoken supporter of feminism and Jewish nationalism. First editions of Zangwill's novels are uncommon, and handsome library sets such as this one are rare.
